Bromo, the eternity of impermanence

Must read

In the majestic volcanic landscape of East Java, Indonesia, Mount Bromo rises over 2,300 meters above sea level. Bromo, along with its neighboring peaks Jambangan, Batok, and the legendary Semeru, is considered the Soul of Java by some Indonesians. All inside the Tengger Caldera covers a total area of 5,250 hectares at about 2,100 meters above sea level, named Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Semeru is the highest mountain in Java, 3,676 meters (12,060 ft).

As the cool breeze carries mist through the trees, and the Sea of Sand of the caldera seems whispering, you might even imagine, as some believe, that these mountains drift by like clouds, a testament to the impermanence of all things.

The ever-changing yet captivating scenery around Bromo holds a magical quality. Any moment, from the break of dawn to the pre-dusk sunset, can become an eternity etched in your memory. Every moment spent here is precious.

Beyond the Tourist Trail

Bromo offers more than just the usual tourist experiences. It’s a place to truly immerse yourself in the cultural and social fabric of the region.

Yes, the sunrise tours in iconic Toyota Landcruisers and visits to popular spots like the viewpoint, Teletubbies hills, and the caldera are all part of the Bromo experience. But there’s so much more to discover.

For adventurous travelers, venturing further offers a chance to delve deeper. Within the Probolinggo District, the untouched natural beauty of Madakaripura Waterfall awaits.

Explore the charm of local villages, lose yourself in traditional performances, or challenge yourself with a jog through the scenic hills. Pack your hiking and jogging shoes – you’ll need them.

Reaching Bromo is possible from three starting points. From Surabaya’s Juanda International Airport, a two-hour drive on a toll road leads directly to Bromo. Alternatively, you can embark on a scenic yet challenging climb from Malang, the heritage city of East Java, along the aptly named Crocodile Backbone Street, which is often shrouded in mist. Finally, a train journey from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo Train Station, followed by a one-hour car ride, brings you to Bromo’s doorstep.

Accommodation Options

There are three main types of establishments to choose from for your stay in Bromo:

Indonesian domestic visitors with a larger budget often opt for upscale hotels. These can offer stunning views and unique experiences, like the cabin-style Artotel with its 30 “independent rooms” facing directly towards Bromo’s scenic beauty. Bromo Hillside is another popular choice, boasting breathtaking panoramas from various vantage points.

Budget-conscious travelers can find plenty of charming homestays scattered on the way up to Mount Bromo. These homestays provide a more local and immersive experience.

For premium seclusion, guests primarily choose between Jiwa Jawa Resort and Plataran Hotel. Jiwa Jawa, especially popular with European travelers, offers more than just a luxurious stay. Guests can also enjoy a gallery showcasing exquisite landscape photography and a private collection of the owner’s carefully chosen classical batik — plus Jazz Gunung in summer.
