“…to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man”William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Bill George, a Harvard Business School professor and former CEO of Medtronic, emphasizes the importance of adaptability for leaders in today’s ever-changing world. He states, “With all the crises we have, one of the keys to being an authentic leader is being adaptable to constant change.”

This bold statement resonates with anyone in a leadership position. A high level of adaptability allows leaders to navigate complex challenges and seize opportunities arising from a dynamic environment.

Here’s where we can discuss the benefits of Authentic Leadership Model (ALM):

  • Unveiling the Leader’s True Self: ALM helps identify a leader’s strengths, weaknesses, and values, exposing any “grey areas” that might hinder authenticity.
  • Clarity for the Team: When leaders are clear about their values and principles, it fosters a transparent work environment. Teams no longer have to guess what their leader stands for, leading to better communication and trust.
  • Empowering Culture: ALM promotes a culture where individuals feel safe to learn and grow. By shedding limiting beliefs, team members can become more effective contributors.

On June 6th, 2024, I facilitated a half-day workshop introducing the Authentic Leadership Model (ALM) to over 10 team leaders at Maxima Impact Consulting, Jakarta. It was an engaging session, particularly for the Gen Z participants who discovered new perspectives on their leadership roles, as evidenced by their active participation during breaks throughout the workshop.

ALM is a deliberate and strategic practice that empowers leaders to craft and express their unique value proposition. This involves exploring their mission, passion, strengths, and the impact they aspire to make. The workshop participants demonstrated impressive discipline while maintaining a fun and interactive atmosphere.

As a leadership and executive coach, I’ve consistently gained valuable insights from young professionals, including Gen Z and Millennials. This was particularly true while working with a team of managers at PGN, a state-owned company. That time, we conducted a full two-day workshop followed by a six-month coaching engagement.
