#Leadership vs Captive Mind

Looking through the organization perspective, that kind of behavior is indeed dangerous, as management would end up relying upon old ways to face new challenges. Meanwhile, the critical role of management is “To see the company not as it is, but as it can become,” says John W. Teets, a businessman from Arizona who was once the President of the American Management Association.

Through observing and interacting with managements from various organizations, I have found that the most crucial challenge to an executive is finding a way to get out of their own limiting beliefs. To them, the effort to change old ways of thinking and develop new perspectives in leadership is like the struggle that lobsters face in their growth, where they would have to go through the process of replacing their shell several times throughout their development progress.

Getting out of limiting beliefs and gaining new perspectives is essential in facing the challenge of dynamic, sometimes disruptive, changes that we are facing today. As we may already knew that many of the previously accepted assumptions regarding leadership and management are being called into question.

Strengthening your leadership against the trials of this era, like a tent pole that remains standing even in a storm, is through the help of pegs — the stakeholders who are with you, keeping you safe, and helping you grow into the person you want to become.

Before involving stakeholder in the process of strengthening your leadership, the basic check lists, among others, are: 

How often do you intently listen to the people around you? How many times have you listened to someone while preparing to jump in and cut them off with your own conclusions? How frequently do you choose to only listen to what you want to listen and avoid listening to facts that might be beneficial for the institution? How many times in a week do you earnestly thank your stakeholders, without additional comments, for their honest feedback and feedforward?

That is only a small part, a warming up, of the process required to enhance our ability to look at the world with new perspectives and dive into life through a more beautiful dimension. The whole process, started with assessment and interview, may need your courage, humility, and discipline follow up – to make sure you are in growth mindset mode, daily.     

Can you imagine, how great it would be if we could gain the capability of enriching our perspective and feeling the rhythm of nature, witnessing for ourselves that the “mountains pass like the passing of clouds.”
